HacMan II Tips and Tricks
Before you jump right into the game, please read the following.
(Game hints are in here!)
General Info
------------
For some basic hints, be sure to read the "message board" on the
launch screen. (The launch screen is the screen where you type in
the starting level.)
On levels 1 through 14 you can speed up the game by holding down
the joystick button. This feature is provided so experts won't get
too bored on the low levels. Releasing the button will return the
game to normal speed.
Keys
----
The following key bindings are defined in "attract" mode:
Space Bar Skip to next attract mode screen
Return Start a game
Esc Quit to desktop/shell
While playing the game, these keys are defined:
S Toggle sound on/off
P Pause game (press P again to resume play)
Space Bar Skip to next board (if you have a skip left)
Alt-Q Quit this game
Alt-S Play digitized sound through ST speaker
Alt-H Play digitized sound through Hippo/Navarone Digitizer
A note to hackers: There are no cheat keys in HacMan II, I promise.
Don't even bother looking! (I know someone's going to look...don't
say I didn't warn you!)
General Playing Hints
---------------------
Having trouble? Can't get past board 18? "Radioactivity" got you
seeing red? Then there are certain tricks you should master in order
to get to the higher boards...
- Use your skips wisely. You've only got three, and the longer you
can go without using them, the better. That's not to say you
should never skip a board; if you've got one life and three skips
left, and Bruce is speeding down a straight stretch toward you,
it's probably time to pound the ol' space bar.
- Try unusual things. Some boards, especially the "Figurit" group,
are completely impossible until you learn a trick - and after that,
they're completely trivial. Remember, things are not always as they
seem.
- Find the secret warps. They'll help your score and get you further
into the game.
- It is possible to "win" HacMan II -- though the game never really
ends, there is a "last board".
- You can start on any board up to sixty-nine, but if you're going for
a win, and you're an experienced player, it might be better to start
on a low board and build up your extra man supply.
- Pay attention to board titles. Quite often, they're not-so-subtle
hints.
- Learn how the ghosts behave. Some can be easily avoided, while
others will almost certainly kill you if you get too close. The
six basic ghosts -- Bruce, Bryan, Tim, Chris, Adria, and Lurch --
are all fairly simple to avoid; but later ghosts have special
tricks, and can do things that you can't do.
Board-Specific Hints
--------------------
1 Deja Vu - Just like "Welcome" from Classic HacMan.
2 Tim is Weird... - A cute but harmless power.
3 Bruce is Angry! - Mostly just at you.
4 Where's Chris? - Don't mistake him for fleeing eyes.
5 Bryan is Back - No points for his dots, so don't waste too much time.
No more infinite score, like in HacMan I...
6 Sexy Adria - She can sometimes help you out.
7 Guard - What's that in front of the pen?
8 Glass - You don't need to get that last dot...
9 Double Dots - Just like mowing the lawn.
10 Lurch v. Hacman - Eeewww! It's so grotesque!!
11 Doctor Who I - Time tunnels in Hac-Space...
12 Doctor Who II - More of the same.
13 Fast Girl - She's faster than you...but sometimes forgiving.
14 Mob Rule! - Let them eat cake, not you.
15 Three's Company - Harder than it looks.
16 Radioactivity - Harder to look at.
17 Bad Medicine - And you're not even sick.
18 Figurit - Be vewy careful. Look before you eat, or your game may end here.
19 I'm So Blue - I gots them monster-narfin', pill-poppin', dot-eatin',
HacMan II blues...
20 Popup - Surprise! Not exactly a stripper from a birthday cake, but
any port in a storm, I suppose.
21 Turbo - One pill, no waiting.
22 Dropout - Amazing, the failure rate at Monster University. Pay
close attention to things.
23 Identity Crisis - Just like Halloween, but with fewer ghosts.
24 Glass II - And more glass boards to come!
25 ????? v. HacMan - A cold, efficient killer.
And you ain't seen nuthin' yet...
26 through ????? - A whole barrel of laughs, including:
Quadruple Dots - Actually, I hate mowing the lawn.
Challenge II - Hope you know the board REAL WELL!
Odd Control III - Don't you hate it when those damned Atari joysticks break?
